What is the history of Tangier Island?
18,000 years ago, Tangier Island was a ridge on the edge of the ancestral Susquehanna River. When the Chesapeake Bay formed over the last 10,000 years, that ridge was isolated from the Delmarva Peninsula and the mainland of Virginia as saltwater flooded the valleys on either side.
Why is it called Tangier Island?
The first known European explorer of the island was John Smith in 1608. He named Tangier and the surrounding islands the “Russel Isles” after the doctor onboard his ship.

Captain John Smith “discovered” Tangier in 1608, and the British claimed it. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1686. In 1812, the Royal Marines built Fort Albion, which is now completely underwater. They offered American slaves safe haven on the island and freed them.

There are about 450 residents of the 1.2-square-mile island, which is 16 miles via water from the next town. During the day, most of the men from the island — known as watermen — are out in boats, collecting crabs and oysters. Others work on tugboats or captain vessels carrying passengers.

Tangier Island’s beach is easily the Chesapeake Bay’s most beautiful beach with its white sand and clear, blue-green water that changes shades with the sun. It’s isolated and remains in its natural state with just enough boardwalk to cross the tidal marsh on the way there.

Yes, you can bring alcohol on aboard however please know that Tangier is a “dry” island and no alcohol can be purchased on the island. That does not mean alcohol is not consumed on the island, but it cannot be purchased. We therefore suggest you leave your alcohol on the boat while touring the island.
