What is Drawknife tool?
A drawknife (drawing knife, draw shave, shaving knife) is a traditional woodworking hand tool used to shape wood by removing shavings. It consists of a blade with a handle at each end. The blade is much longer (along the cutting edge) than it is deep (from cutting edge to back edge).
What’s the difference between a Spokeshave and a Drawknife?
A drawknife removes a lot of wood quickly with little finesse, so unless you prefer handwork for roughing out workpieces, you may not find much use for a drawknife. A spokeshave ( above) more closely resembles a hand plane, with its adjustable, replaceable blade fitted tightly to the tool’s body for finer shavings.
Is a curved or straight draw knife better?
Generally, a curved knife for me will do deeper cuts or bark removal easier than a straight blade. Both will work. By the way, I’m assuming the curve is along the horizontal plane of the blade, like a sweep. There are draw knife type tools that have the curve bent into the blade so it forms a cylindrical shape.
How do you shave down wood?
How to Shave Wood
- Use a hammer and chisel to shave small pieces from a piece of wood.
- Use a hand plane to shave pieces from wood surfaces that are generally flat.
- Use a sharp pocket knife to shave pieces from a wood object to form or shape a wood object.
How do you remove a bark with a draw knife?
A draw knife is used to strip bark from small-diameter logs or poles for waterbars, turnpikes, and other timber work. Grasp it by both handles and pull the blade along the log toward yourself. A draw knife has handles at a right angle to the blade whereas a bark knife’s handles are in line with the blade.
How do I choose a draw knife?
Look for one with tight handles, that has not been beat, or ground down to nothing. Drawknives were made with cutting edges more than a foot long or as short as 4″. An 8″ to 10″ knife is the right size for most work.
