As I understand it, MATE was originally built to get away from GNOME 3 and GTK3 by simply forking GNOME 2. However a couple years ago MATE switched from GTK2 to GTK3 and in doing so broke legacy themes, broke plenty of other stuff too, and in general runs worse than it used to.
