Four-wheel-drive vehicles with high clearance and low range function are strongly recommended. All-wheel drive vehicles without true 4WD function and vehicles with low clearance will have difficulty along inland tracks and in soft sand, and are therefore not suitable on Mulgumpin (Moreton Island).

No. As Tangalooma Island Resort and Tangalooma Launch Services are fully licensed, no alcohol can be brought onto either the launch vessels or the resort itself. Alcohol can be purchased onboard all launch vessels, and also for take away back to your room from the resort bar.

History of the Tangalooma Wrecks It was decided to sink fifteen junk ships along the sandbank to form a break wall, providing a safe anchorage for the boats. Due to the unique feature of the sunken boats, the island’s harbour solution became an instant tourist attraction.

You’ll need a 4WD to traverse the unsealed, rugged and sandy roads throughout Moreton Island, and you must organise a vehicle permit before arriving on the island.

No vehicle access To reduce the disturbance of migratory shorebirds, vehicle access along the beach at Mirapool is prohibited 3 hrs either side of high tide, and a speed limit of 30 km/hr applies at all other times. Please use the Mirapool bypass road. Stay on formed tracks. It is illegal to drive off-track on dunes.

How far in advance should I book the MICAT ferry?
Bookings are essential for both passengers and vehicles on the Micat. If you’re planning on taking your 4WD over for a weekend, or a long weekend during summer, we recommend booking at least 4 weeks in advance to get the best ferries.
